Types and Uses of ATMs

ATMs communicate to the acquiring processor by either:

  1. A lease line, which is a dedicated, constant communication data phone line between the ATM and the acquiring processor. The ATM owner usually pays a flat rate per month for this connection.
  2. A dial-up line, which is a standard phone line used for communication between the ATM and the acquiring processor. When a cardholder inserts his/her card into the ATM, the ATM "dials-up" the acquiring processor. Acquiring processors usually provide a 1-800 number or route through a local phone service network (such as CompuServe) so that any long distance phone charges are paid by the acquiring processor (the cost of the call is usually bundled into the per transaction fee charged by the processor and paid from interchange/surcharge revenues).
ATMs fall into different categories according to use and placement location:
  1. Lobby (interior) models are deployed inside locations where climate and access are controlled. Most come in either front or rear cash load design. The lobby models are the most popular in the retail environment.
  2. Through-The-Wall (TTW) models are mounted through a wall with the face of the ATM exposed for use by cardholders and the back of the ATM accessible for cash loading and maintenance. If the ATM is mounted with the face of the ATM exposed to weather, then the ATM must be a weatherized model. This model can also be mounted in a kiosk for walk-up or drive-up access and is popular with financial institutions. This model is used in many circumstances where access is open and high security is needed.
  3. Self Contained/Stand Alone models are exterior, weatherproofed ATMs usually mounted on slabs and require no risk to house the ATM. These ATMs are used primarily by financial institutions for drive-up access and where access is open and high security is needed.
The above models can be cash dispensing only (CDs) or may be deposit accepting as well. Deposit accepting ATMs are usually used only by financial institutions. ATMs can be configured with many options (depending on manufacturer) including:
  • color screens
  • multiple dispensers
  • various safes
